Since my major is mechanical engineering, I have been longing to use it in design. In my sophomore year, I had my first tryout of utilizing both engineering and design in a project. Teaming up with some of my classmates, we joined our school Entrepreneur Day’s competition. The comfort of passengers neck and shoulder during commuting is the problem we would like to solve. Rather than designing a neck pillow right away, we looked at the essence of this problem and analyzed the drawback of existing products. Since providing support to users’ neck is the only goal, we started to analyze the mechanics lay behind by applying what we had learnt at that time. We ended up designing a concept Scarf X, a scarf-like-neck-pillow, which is 65% lighter and 86% smaller than the average neck pillow on the market. After the competition I didn’t stop right there. In my portfolio I also give out some other examples of these kinds of fusion between engineering and design.
