The charts provide information on the natural sources of water available on our planet and examine their distribution across different types of water and different regions of the world. Overall, almost all the water on Earth resides in the oceans; freshwater comprises only a low percentage of the total water resources and is mainly frozen or located underground. Moreover, the tiny amount of freshwater that is accessible on the surface is distributed unevenly across the continents. About 97% of water on Earth is saltwater and only three per cent of it is freshwater. Furthermore, over two-thirds of freshwater is trapped as ice in glaciers and polar ice caps.
