‘All children should learn to speak a foreign language as soon as they start school.’ How far do you agree with this proposal? How important is it for a child to learn a foreign language?

With the world in such globalized era, learning second language is becoming almost essential for most people especially for offspring. Some people claiming that it should be started promptly when they start school. I agree with this statement due to the following reasons. First of all, when children start to study new things, their minds fresh and can catch more information compared with adults. Studies indicate that the child’s brain in early years have at least one million new neural connections, which are made every second, more than at any other time in life. Experts also emphasize that learning the language before the age of ten years allow children to speak correct, and fluent as an indigenous person. Furthermore, children do not have any fears that make mistakes when they are speaking in a new language, and looking foolish in front of others. Illiteracy continues to be a concern for many countries in the world today. What are the causes of illiteracy in the modern world, and what effects does it have on the people concerned and on society as a whole?

There is no doubt that illiteracy is a great concern, especially in low-income countries where people are most at risk. There are several reasons for this, and a number of damaging effects, which we will discuss here. Possibly the major factor is having parents who are illiterate. When parents are illiterate, they usually do not give a considerable concern on their children’s education; hence it has accelerated the rise of illiteracy levels. The second key cause is a child labour. Many children in underdeveloped countries (such as South Sudan, Niger, Mali, etc.) skip education, and try to get a job so that they help in fending for their families. A third factor is a social or cultural priority. In some nations, especially in term of Islamic religion, boys are allowed to go to school, but girls remain at home.
