It is believed that unpaid community service should be a mandatory part of highschool programmes. However, while I believe that community service is beneficial, I think that it should not be a compulsory part of the school curriculum. On the one hand, there are reasons why community service is beneficial for students. First, public service improves students’ social skills and responsibility. This is because public service helps students to engage directly with different communities, widening their social circles. As a result, their social skills, such as communication skills, problem-solving skills improve, which may be helpful in their later lives when they enter the competitive labour workforce. Lastly, public service strengthens students’ sense of community. As students take part in community service, they get to help the community where they live.
