It is common to see reports about increased screen time among children and discussions have arisen as to whether this early exposure to television programs is beneficial or detrimental. From my perspective, there are a myriad of benefits to watching television with proper parental guidance. Those who oppose screen viewing at a young age may claim that there are adverse effects on children’s health and behavior. More time in front of the screen equates to longer hours of idleness and possibly a higher intake of snacks, hence a lower frequency of doing sports and a higher risk of obesity. Couch potatoes, coined decades ago, might be an old-fashioned term, but still an appropriate description for the young viewers who spend a considerable amount of time watching television.
